Update 2: Google discontinued the support of setting up Chromecast through the Chrome browser on the PC/Mac. So, you have to set up a new Chromecast on an Android or iOS device through the Google Home app.

But this does NOT affect the casting functions of Chrome browser on a PC or Mac. You can still cast a tab, or the desktop, or a file from the browser directly as explained in this guide. In fact, you do not need to install any extensions on the PC/Mac.

Update 1: Chromecast app is renamed as Google Home app, which manages both Chromecast and Google Home devices.

1. Contents in the box

Once you open the box, you will find the following items:

  1. a Chromecast HDMI dongle
  2. a USB power cable,
  3. a power adapter
  4. an HDMI extender
  5. a product info booklet

Chromecast HDMI dongle

Chromecast HDMI dongle should be plugged into an  HDMI port on your TV. It is powered through the USB cable provided. You may use the power adapter provided or use the USB port in your TV to power the dongle.

Chromecast HDMI dongle must connect to an existing WiFi network to stream videos from the internet to your TV, or cast your Chrome browser from a supported PC or laptop.

Chromecast is controlled from any supported devices on the same WiFi network, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. There is no remote control for Chromecast.

USB power cable

The USB power cable is used to provide power for the Chromecast. One end (the smaller one, micro USB) plugs into your Chromecast, and the other end (normal USB) plugs into either a USB port on your TV or the power adapter provided.

Power adapter

The power adapter is optional and can be used with the USB cable to power your Chromecast if your TV does not have a USB port.

Sometimes, your TV USB port may fail to provide sufficient current. It is recommended to use the power adapter for the initial setup.

HDMI extender

The HDMI extender is optional. It should be used if your Chromecast does not fit directly into your TV. The HDMI extender may also be used to improve your WiFI reception.  If it is recommended for the setup, you may see a notification on your TV screen to use the extender.

The HDMI extender should be connected to the TV first, then to the Chromecast.

Product info booklet

The booklet gives a brief introduction of the contents in the box, and some warranty and safety information. Please read it before setting your Chromecast.

But this is not a Chromecast user manual.  and this is the reason why we wrote this online Chromecast manual to help you set up your Chromecast.

2. Connect  Chromecast to TV

To set up Chromecast, you need to connect Chromecast to your TV.  You may follow the following steps to connect Chromecast to TV:

Step 1: power up Chromecast.

Plug one end (smaller one, micro USB) of the USB power cable into your Chromecast and the other end of the USB power cable into the power adapter provided. Then plug the power adapter into a nearby power outlet.

You may also use the USB port in your TV to power the Chromecast. But it is recommended to use the included power adapter.

Step 2:  Connect Chromecast to TV

Plug  Chromecast into any HDMI input port on your TV. If the fit is too tight or too loose, you may use the included HDMI extender.

If you already use up all HDMI ports, you may get an HDMI splitter or an HDMI switch (read Chromecast troubleshooting part on this). For the initial setup, you should try to use the HDMI port on the TV directly.

Step 3: Switch to the correct HDMI source

If the HDMI source is set correctly, you should see the Chromecast setup screen on TV as shown below. The setup instruction reads like

Set me up

On your laptop or phone, visit, google.com/chromecast/setup/

My setup name is “ChromecastXXXX”

If your TV does not show this screen, it usually means you do not choose the source correctly. In your TV remote control, find the source button (usually next to the power button), press to select the correct source.

3. Setup Chromecast

Before using Chromecast, you must set up your Chromecast once.  Chromecast setup can be done in an Android or iOS phone or tablet or a Mac, Windows or Chromebook Pixel computer.

Once the Chromecast setup is finished, you can cast from all supported devices without having to set up Chromecast again. Then the only requirement is that your device and Chromecast must connect to the same network (the same router). Chromecast supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. 5GHz is NOT supported.

For dual-band routers, your device can connect to 5GHz; while Chromecast connects to 2.4GHz.

Before you begin the Chromecast setup process, make sure your device to be used for setup is connected to a wireless network. Chromecast later will join the same network. Then visiting www.google.com/chromecast/setup on a device that is running a supported operating system:

  • Android Gingerbread 2.3 & higher
  • iOS6 & higher
  • Windows 7 & higher
  • OS X 10.7 & higher
  • Chrome OS (Chromebook Pixel on Chrome 28 & higher)

Update: Google discontinued the support for Chromecast setup from a PC. You have to set up a Chromecast device from an Android or iOS device.

Following the on-screen instructions to finish the Chromecast setup process.

If your Chromecast is set up correctly and your TV is on the correct input source, you will see the Chromecast “ready to cast” screen (Home Screen) with your Wi-Fi network name refereed on the bottom left-hand side (see image below).

3.1 Chromecast setup from a Windows PC

If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8, follow the following steps:

Step 1: make sure your PC is connected to the router either through a cable or through wireless.

Step 2: Install Google Chrome.

Chromecast only works with Chrome browser. So, if your computer does not have Chrome browser yet, download one from: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/

Follow the instructions to install the browser.

Step 3: Download the Google Home App.

In your browser, navigate to https://cast.google.com/chromecast/setup Save the file or run it once it is downloaded. If you choose to save the file, you will need to double click on the file to begin the installation process.

Step 4: Run the Google Home app.

Once the app is started, it will automatically start to search for the Chromecast device nearby.

When the Chromecast was found,  the device’s name will be shown on your PC. You will see the screen of “Ready to setup ChromecastXXXX”.

Click “Continue” in the installer.

Now check the code shown on your TV screen and the App window.  Click That’s my Code if the codes match.

Then,  you will be asked to provide the info of the wireless network to be used for Chromecast.  Chromecast will connect to this network automatically next time.

If the setup is successful, you will see the “ready to cast” screen.

3.2 Chromecast setup from Android phone or Android tablet

To set up Chromecast using your Android phone or tablet, you must install the Google Home App for Android. Your Android device must run Android 2.3 or later versions.

Step 1: Make sure your Android phone or tablet is connected to the WiFi network.

Step 2: Get the Google Home App for Android.

You can get the App in Google Play store directly or at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chromecast.app

Or navigate to: http://www.google.com/chromecast/setup

Step 3: Launch the Google Home App for Android.

Once the app is launched, it will automatically search for Chromecast devices in range. Select the Chromecast device you want to set up from the list and follow the prompts on the screen to complete the setup of your Chromecast. The other steps are similar to those for Windows PC.

If the setup is successful, you will see the “ready to cast” screen.

3.3 Chromecast setup from iPhone or iPad

To set up Chromecast using your iOS phone or tablet, you must install the Google Home App for iOS, which is available for iOS devices running iOS 6 or later.

Step 1: Make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to the WiFi network.

Step 2: Get the Google Home App for iOS from iTunes.

You can get the App in iTunes directly or at: https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/chromecast/id680819774?mt=8

Or navigate to: http://www.google.com/chromecast/setup

Step 3: Launch the Google Home App 

Once the app is launched, it will automatically search for Chromecast devices in range. Select the Chromecast device you want to set up from the list and follow the prompts on the screen to complete the setup of your Chromecast. The other steps are similar to those for Windows PC.

If the setup is successful, you will see the “ready to cast” screen.

3.4 Chromecast setup from Mac OS and OS X

To set up Chromecast on Mac, follow similar steps as in Windows. The requirement is that you need OS X 10.7 or higher.

4. Troubleshoot Chromecast and FAQs

Q1. Nothing shows on the TV screen. 

A1: The possible causes:

  • Forget to turn on the TV. Turn on it.
  • No power for Chromecast. Check the light on your Chromecast. It should be illuminated or blinking.
  • USB port in TV does not provide enough current for Chromecast. The LED colour will be in red. Try the included power adapter
  • TV source is not set to the HDMI port.  Check the source options on TV.
  • You are using some old HDMI switch or splitter. Most of them should work with Chromecast, but a few may not. Try to plug Chromecast to the TV directly.

Q2. My PC (laptop, smartphone, tablet…) does not find any devices when running the Chromecast App.

A2: Possible causes:

  • Your PC (laptop, smartphone, tablet…) is not connected to the wireless router. Connect your device to your home network.
  • Your PC  (laptop) is using cable connection to the router. Most of the time, this is NOT a problem. But some router may have strange settings for LAN and wireless. So, try a wireless connection.
  • Your PC does not have a wireless card. You must use a PC with wireless capabilities.
  • Your PC  (laptop, smartphone, tablet…) is using 5GHz connection. Most of the time, this is NOT a problem. But some router may have strange settings for these two networks. So, try 2.4GHz wireless connection.
  • Your PC  (laptop, smartphone, tablet…) is using 802.11 AC connection. Most of the time, this is NOT a problem. But some router may have strange settings for AC and b/g/n network. So, try to disable AC in your router.

      It is also safe to unplug the Chromecast power.

    • I have setup chrome cast and started watching YouTube program on my smart TV. I used IPad for setting up. How do I come back to iPad? I tried switching off the TV, it didn't help. I get a prompt "connection to the server is lost". I need help.

        • Yes, Chromecast need connect to your router. Normally, it should ask you to select. But if your router settings hide SSID, you have to type the name.

          • After Chromecast is ready to cast, as the tv screen says,the Chromecast icons still are not reappearing in all my apps! How do I fix this problem? I am disabled& this my only way of connecting to the world. Please, HELP! Thank you Kriss Martinez

          • Your mobile device needs to connect to the same router. What happens if you starts Chromecast app on the mobile device?

          • Have tried to install Chromecast today, it has recognised all our devices but forces an update which sticks at 0% & are unable to cast at all

          • The update should take less than a few mins. If it is stuck in update for more than 20mins, you may disconnect the power adapter. Wait a minute and then connect it.

  • Bonjour i have installed my chromecast and i see on my tv screen that it's there. It says Ready to cast. But when trying to add my Ipad, the instrutions tell me to select the chromecast network and then come back to the apps but the network is not there. I could see it prior to the instalation. Thank you for your help.

    • Did you try to install the Chromecast app on your iPad? Once installed, you can launch it to search all Chromecast devices in your WiFi Network.

      • Thank you for your answer. Now I'm able to watch You Tube video with Chromecast but that's all. Don't have the little "pictogram" of Ccast to watch pictures or videos that were taken or filmed with my IPad. How can I do that? Thanks again

  • chtomecast will not show setup on tv screen. chrome cast setsup fine on table but will not show on tv so tv won't set up!

    • There is no setup in TV. You just need insert it into any HDMI port. Chromecast is treated just as a normal source for the TV.

      If you did not see anything on TV screen, how did you finish the setup?

  • Yay! I switched the HDMI port on side of tv and it worked. The pictures directions showed to change input with remote which I had been trying to do and would not work..

  • Is there anyway to speed up casting from tab in the chrome browser? This works very well for supported apps like Netflix However, casting from tabs falls far short of Airplay. I dropped the quality to the lowest settings and video is still much too laggy to watch. I have very high-speed internet (80 down and 30 up) so that's not the issue.

      • I'm not sure I understand. This is video already on a web site. As an example, I go to a website to watch my local news cast a couple of hours after it airs on tv. Air playing it works great with great quality. Tab casting is very laggy and slow.

        • The purpose of Chromecast is to watch on a larger screen (e.g., TV). You can cast the local video in your PC to the TV.

          Most of the time tab casting should work very well. But Casting the whole desktop may have some issues as this is still a experimental feature.

  • Chromecast setup fine. Apps on iPad like Netflix and BBC iPlayer play fine on iPad with casting icon present. Try to cast and iPlayer says "there was a problem try again later" and Netflix just freezes. Any idea where the problem lies? Many thanks.

  • I easily connect the chromecast to my TV and was able to use it from my laptop via Wifi.
    Unfortunately, it refuse to connect to my Galaxy S3 smartphone. The phone does not find it.
    Is there incompatibility issues with some specific devices like the Samsung GS3?

    • As long as your phone can run Chromecast app, it should work with Chromecast.

      Please make sure your S3 is connecting to the wifi, not the mobile data.

      The correct way to find Chromecast is to start the Chromecast app, not from other apps.

      • I did it as recommended and obtained the same result.
        I ran the chromecast app on the S3. The S3 is connected to the wifi but the do not find the chromecast device on the wifi network as the error message tells me.
        The Chromecast device is well connected because everything works fine with my laptop.

    • You cannot "add" TV to Chromecast. At any time, your Chromecast can only use one TV, which it connects to.

      For TV, Chromecast is just a hdmi source.

  • Wish I had this info before I bought this thing. The product has no info regarding operating system requirements. I was planning on using my Galaxy Tab. I couldnt even download the app because Google Play says I dont have a device. I tried my rarely used Windows XP laptop after downloading the Chrome browser as the prefered browse. Chrome opened up in IE! Ive got a Windows 7 desktop but that wont do me any good. I guess these things only cater to people that always have the latest tech and send lots of equipment to landfills.

    • Chromecast requires Android 2.3. In some regions, Galaxy Tab was updated to Android 2.3. If you updated your Tab to 2.3 before, you should be able to use Chromecast from it.

      To cast a Chrome browser tab from PC, it does require relatively good hardware. But casting from Android devices through apps does not.

  • Thanks for the response. I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out but I'm not getting anywhere. My firmware version is 2.3.4 and buildware is Gingerbread.E17. I dont know which is more relevent. The update is current.

    I also read somewhere in my post purchase research that Chromecast will not do what I specifically bought it to do. I want to watch directly from network websites like PBS or CBS. The BestBuy person assured me that it would do that.

    • I'm sure Chromecast works well on 2.3.6, but not sure about 2.3.4. Google just mention 2.3. So, I guess it should work. You need update Google Play store as well.

      In your tablet, you can search for Chromecast app in the Play store, and install it. Then you can manage Chromecast from your tablet, and use any apps that support Chromecast.

      I do NOT think PBS or CBS supports Chromecast. Chromecast relies on apps (on Android or iOS devices), if the app does not support Chromecast, you simply cannot cast to the TV. Some big names with official Chromecast support are listed here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/apps.html

      For casting from PC, it can cast a Chrome browser tab (formal feature) or the whole desktop (experimental). But it requires moderate hardware. It needs Win 7 or Win 8 for Windows. Occasionally the audio may not work well.

      • Thanks for the tip on updating Google Play. It was looking a bit odd with small icons and a different screen layout. Got Chromecast downloaded. So far so good.

    I'm from India, I've purchased that Chromecast. Could you please clear me how it'll work if I'll play any movie @my android mobile phone can I show the same @my HD TV.

    • Hi Debashis, Chromecast doesn't work that way. You may read my old post on Chromecast vs Miracast. To mirror your phone screen (if your phone supports screen mirroring) , you need a miracast supported TV or a miracast adapter.

      Chromecast is a streaming device, you need a streaming service to make it work.

      It is still possible to play local media's to Chromecast. Please read the how - to guide section.

        • If your TV can play files on USB, you don't need Chromecast.

          If you TV cannot play files on the USB, Chromecast can not help either.

          (some TVs can play media file on USB. Some cannot because their USB ports are for PC connection).

          Anyway, can either cast a Chrome browser tab from a PC (please read the How-to guide), streaming from a media server (you need a server in your home or through the internet).

          • few media files can read my TV, but few like .mkv and some time .avi cant read from USB. So i can play that extension media file using Chromecast.

          • In this case, you can install Plex media server on your pc and send the video to Chromecast from the pc. Please read the guide in the home page.

  • I installed chromecast to my tv through my android phone on March 7th. I've been watching movies via netflix since that time until and including yesterday. Last night and today, I can't seem to get chromecast to appear on my tv. My tv screen is black, as if it is off, but it is NOT off. On my phone, it states "Not in range". I also notice other people's tag names with my secured addess listed on my phone. Has someone stolen my access? I can't seem to figure this one out. Please help! And Thanks!

    • First, did you notice the color of of the led in your Chromecast? Is it white? You need make sure it's powered on and connected to the TV.

      If it's on, and your TV source is correct for Chromecast, you can try to do a factory reset for Chromecast by pressing and holding the button for about 25 seconds. There's a guide on factory reset in our how to guide section.

      It's hard to steal you access because Chromecast requires a code shown on the TV which it physically connects to.

  • I have been using Chromecast for a while now and I love it but our internet got shut off and a friend is letting me use his WIFI can I watch chromecast on his WIFI if it isn't in my house?? I have to have my computer outside for it to connect because it it two houses down. Is it possible

  • Hi, I have no empty HDMI port left on my TV, instead I use an HDMI switch, which still has one port available.
    I use the Marmitek Connect 310 HDMI Switcher. Could I use the Chromecast with this HDMI switch?
    If not, I have no use for it, so for me this is essential. Is there a list of HDMI switches that work with Chromecast?

  • HELP- I am trying to cast my entire screen and it is just showing the little blue chromecast logo... need it for a meeting tomorrow. Thoughts?

    • Probably, your desktop graphic settings. You can test whether you can cast a Chrome browser tab.

      If you are using windows 7, try to disable Aero desktop (use the basic one).

  • chromecast works good on my laptop, but i want it on my samsung galaxy 10.1 tablet that is running android 4.0.1, but i get a incompatable error. the specs says it should be android 3 and higher. Sho whats the problem?

    • I think you need update your play store. Also the latest system version for note 10.1 should be jellybean 4.1. You may also consider to update it, although Chromecast doesn't require this.

      When and how did you get the compatible messages?

      Please note, you don't need do any setup on note 10.1. After you update your play store, it should work directly. You can check YouTube app, it should have the casting icon.

      • Well i'm not really sure of whats the problem. i get the incompatable devices at the beginning of the install. and to be honest, i'm not sure what tou mean by jellybean. i don't see that in the system specs. and to really confuse things, it started working on it's own an ran for about an hour and then just quit. so i am now balder than when i first started.

        • First, you need setup your Chromecast once unless you change your router.

          You can perform the initial settings in any device. And, again, once Chromecast is setup, you can use it from any other devices.

          For Android devices, the requirement is the very old Ginger Bread (Android 2.3). Very likely, your device have a newer version (4.X).

          Can you follow the setup screens on TV?

          • well it setup ok on my laptop and works well on that. it's just a head scratcher. now the really strange thing is that it comes up also and says no compatable devices and lists the vizio box which isn't even plugged in.

  • on the laptop when the app is checking for compatability. and the vizio i have is completely unplugged and in the box so unless there is a cap that's letting send a signal, i am really confused. and i just want to also say thanks for any and all help you have provided.

  • to be honest i'm not sure what i did. i have a samsung galaxy 10.1 tab ( wifi ). I am checking w/samsung on this also cause it is sparatic in running, and the app doesn't show in the app area. so it's a hit and miss on if it's gonna work. again thanks for the assist. i'll let you know if we find anything out.

    • What app? Chromecast need setup only once. If it is setup already. Your Galaxy Tab only need connect to the same router, d no settings are required.

      You just need make sure your Google play store app is updated. If you using YouTube, you need update YouTube app as well.

  • I just had a question before I purchased this product. I have been doing research and I was wondering if you purchased 2 chromecast devices is it possible to set them up on 2 different TVs on the same router? Thanks in advance

    • Yes, they are no issues with multiple Chromecasts in one network. Each Chromecast has its own name (you can name them easily).

  • Can you install multiple Chrome Cast devices to multiple TV's showing different things on each TV?

    • Yes, you can install multiple Chromecast in the same network. Each of them has its own name (you can change). When casting, you can select which one to be used.

      Technically (it does not make any practical sense), you can have multiple Chromecast devices for one TV (if you have enough HDMI port for each Chromecast).

  • i've been trying to disconnect my chrome cast from my galaxy note 3 but it wont disconnect from it. It wont even cast on my screen either I've been trying to unplug the chromecast and still nothing so what can i do because i want to watch my movies but i cant and its so frustrating so please can anyone can help me please. Thank You

    • When you stop using it, it's safe to unplug the USB power cable. There is no sleeping mode or power saving mode in Chromecast.

      Of course, it's always a good practice to stop casting from your mobile devices before unplug it.

  • question--I can cast to my tv from tablet and pc, but I REALLY want to be able to cast from my tablet to my pc---it says it's casting, but I see nothing showing...ideas? Thanks

    • I don't think this is supported.

      First, the display all be occupied by your pc when you turn the pc on. There is no meaning for casting from other sources.

      If you don't turn on your pc, the casting to the monitor should be same as casting to a TV. Unfortunately, most monitors does not support audio through HDMI.

  • Hi, my Chromecast can't connect to the wifi network. The modem has WPS security and is a Orange Livebox 4B88 (France). Usually if I need to connect my phone or new device, I always need to press the WPS button on the modem and at the same time on my device. Since there is no such possibility on Chromecast, please advice how to connect the Chromecast to the WiFi. Thanks

    • Chromecast doesn't support wps. You need provide the security key for the connection during the setup as indicated on the setup screen. You need check the router mannual on how to find the security keys. Usually, from the Web interface where you manage the router, you can find all settings.

  • hi, screen mirroring works fine with my s4 but when I tried with my note 10.1 2014 cannot find the option cast this screen on the chromecast app 1.7.4. My tablet is running android 4.3. Any idea? Any other app to sreen mirror?

  • I have SONY BRAVIA TV which is two years old.It is WI-FI enabled but it requires USB Wireless LAN Adapter UWA-BR100 to access the internet. Can chromecast serve the pupose of this device USB Wireless LAN Adapter UWA-BR100. Please reply asap.

    • The USB adapter connects your TV to the internet.

      Chromecast is a totally different device. It's not a wireless adapter. It connects to your router, and send HDMI input to your TV. It will not add Internet connectivity for your TV.

      The USB port on chromecast is for power only. The output is through HDMI.

    • It depends on the casting app. Most apps have a stop casting button.

      Of course, you can stream new videos to Chromecast and the old one will stop automatically.

  • Can a Chromecast connected to external electrical plug, using the adapter, cause an electrical surge in the TV. My TV circuit board damaged as soon as I switched the plug on. Google customer service is saying HDMI don't pass on the electric current inside the TV.

    • Of course, you can connect Chromecast to an external plug with the provided adapter (or any usb chargers with rated current 800-1000mA). Some TVs may not provide sufficient current for Chromecast. This is actually recommended.

  • I have everything set up but now that I try and stream from my iPad to the tv and there is no button to click to send it to the tv

    • Did you try YouTube app? Please note on your iPad, you need install chromecast app but no settings are required.

    • Of course, multiple devices can share one Chromecast. All devices should connect to same router.

      You need install chromecast app (no setup is required) on your phone, and make sure it connects to the same router as Chromecast.

    • No, you don't need set it again unless you change the network.

      Chromecast only remember the network which it connects to. It can only remember one. The setup actually writes the wifi info.

      For tv, Chromecast just like a dvd player.

      But if you plan to use it in any different wifi networks, you have to do the setup everytime when changing network.

    • You need install Google cast extension for your Chrome browser on the laptop.

      You must finish the setup first.

  • I have an iPad I have connected to my tv via chromecast. When using the chromecast app "play movies" when playing movies the movies are lagging (or buffering?). The movies are unwatchable it is so bad. I don't have the probl watching the movies directly off my iPad - only when I cast to the tv.
    I read that May need to changes play back settings in the chromecast app. But how do I do this on an iPad? I don't have a laptop.

    Would this be te reason my movies are lagging/buffering?

    • Do you mean Google Play Movies? The playing quality is mainly determined by the internet connection. Nothing is through your iPad once you initiate the play through Chromecast. Please note, Chromecast can only use 2.4G Hz network and your iPad probably is using 5G Hz, which usually provides better connection quality.

      If you are talking about local media (movies saved in your ipad or local NAS), it depends on the app you are using.

    I really enjoy my chromecast, but I do have one issue with it. Whenever I exit out of google chrome after casting and then open google chrome again, I always have to re-download the google cast extension before I can cast. If I stop casting and leave the google chrome open, the cast icon doesn't disappear. I have a windows 8.1 laptop that I cast from. Any ideas how I can set up my computer so I don't have to download the extension every time? Thank you. Any help is appreciated.

    • The Google cast extension need install only once. It is like other extensions for Chrome.

      If you cannot see the cast icon, you can re-load the page. Maybe it is related to some settings on your laptop.

  • I connect my chromecast to my TV , select input channel...which is correct. I then see a spinning chrome wheel then black screen... Then nothing.....just a black screen.     • What's the color of the LED in Chromecast? red or white?

      If you are using the USB power from TV, you may try the included USB power adapter, which provides sufficient and suitable current for Chromecast device.

      • I basically have the same problem as above. Plugged in to tv and outlet. See chromecast spinning logo and then nothing. Flashing white led.

        • You may try to use the bundled power adapter if you are not using it.

          If it's stuck there, you may unplug the power cable, wait a few mins, then power it again.

    • For laptop, you need install Google cast extension. Once installed, the icon is always there even you removed your Chromecast device.

      For iPad, it depends on the app. What app are you using?

  • Hi, Read through your post. Could not find what happened to me. On my ipad it shows 'devices' - my device is there and says it is ready to cast but I have no way to actually cast a video. I go to the videos stored on my ipad and play them but it does not show on the tv screen. I tried downloading realplayer cloud but it will not stream any of my videos.
    Seems to work off my macbook, though very shotty... Am about to give up!! Help?

  • I tried to set up Chromecast via the Chromcast setup app on my laptop. I kept gettng an "uh-oh" messsage saying something about my router. So I used my iphone insted, downloaded the iphone app, and set up my Chromecast device using that. I then downloaeded the Chromecast extension for the Chrome browse on my laptopr. I am able to cast from the Chrome browser now to my tv. But when I go back to the Chromecast setup app, it still says "No Chromecasts found on my network." How is that possible when I can cast from the Chrome browser? Any idea how to fix this?

    • Very likely, some security settings (antivirus, firewall) blocks some communication.

      Anyway, you need setup once for Chromecast unless you change the network.

    • You can set the time format and time zone from the Chromecast app in your Android devices.

      Start the Chromecast app in your Android device, it should detect the Chromecast devices in your network automatically. Tap the name of the that Chromecast to access the device info page, tap Time format, you can change the format to 24 houir or 12 hour format.

      In Chromecast app, you can also manually search for Chromecast devices in your network. Tap the menu key (top left), then tap device.

    • No, you can just plug it into another TV on your house and it should work.

      It's not necessary to do the setup. You only need setup once unless you change router or wireless settings.

      What do you see on the TV screen when you plug the Chromecast to the TV? Make sure the TV source is correct. Also, you may try to use the official power adapter because USB ports on TV may fail to provide sufficient current.

    I'm a new user to Chromecast and pretty much gone through quite a few sites to solve the Chromecast no volume / audio issue but still can't get the sound from Youtube or media files to flow.

    Could you kindly advise some workaround or solutions?

    I'm getting a soft buzzing on my TV speakers (no other sound) while playing Youtube videos on Chromecast but normal analog tv channels works fine.

    My TV set is the older generation of Philips LED tv with only 01 HDMI port and no USB port.

    • How did you do the casting? Through pc or some apps in your mobile devices?

      For the TV, do you have any external speaker/audio receivers?

      You may also check TV settings on hdmi part.

  • if your using the ac adapator, make sure it is on a grounded outlet. some non grounded outlets can cause a AC hum to be heard on speakers.

  • I've set up chrome cast successfully and used Netflix immediately, now when I want to cast I cannot because my iPad does not show the cast in the wifi list, I've searched with my iphone and laptop and sign of it, have also searched unsuccessfully via the chrome cast app. What am I missing?     • You need install Chromecast app in your mobile devices (iPad or iPhone). Then open Netflix app. You should then find teh casting button inside the app.

      Please make sure your mobile devices are also connected to the same router.

      On the laptop, if it is connected to the same network as Chromecast, you can click the "google cast" icon. This should give you a list of available Chromecast devices currently connected to the same router.

  • I have the app installed on my devices and everything worked ok initially, it's only since going back to use for the 2nd time that issues arose. I have re set the Chromecast a few times but keep getting the uh oh message saying it can't talk to the same router as the iPad which it did do originally and I've not changed any settings so why has it fallen off! I've noticed it gets as far changing the name to what I have selected and then connection is lost.

    • Did you mean Chromecast cannot connect to the router? Is this indicated in the tv screen? What's the exact message on TV screen?

  • I have connected my Chromecast to HDMI port on Samsung SyncMaster P2470LHD and plugged the usb to a charger, but selecting HDMI input with the remote doesn't show anything. Actually it says that there is no device connected. Chromecast blinks white and the android app finds it, but it seems that the TV doesn't recognize it. Any tip?

    • For tv, chromecast is just a normal HDMI source.

      You can try to unplug the power adapter, wait 2 mins, then connect the power back, and check again.

      When using charger, make sure the charger has output current close or above 1000mA if you not using the bundled adapter.

  • Very Confused. Yesterday i purchased my chromecast and set it all up fine. It took two attempts but it was working none-the-less. I watched a film and some random stuff from youtube to test it - all fine and dandy. Left it overnight (plugged in). Came back to it this morning and i have only a black screen for the HDMI channel. I have checked the chromecast and the light is on fine. I have switched HMDI ports and channels and still just a black screen. According to my phone it is ready to cast.... any ideas anyone?!

  • Chromecast was working fine on my Samsung TV but a few days ago the screen went black. Switched HDMI ports and powered off and on and reset chromescast but no joy. Audio is still working and it is casting but no picture. HDMI ports still work for other devices. Tested chromecast on Kids LG TV and it works fine there. Any ideas?

  • I was able to set it up, I got on screen "ready to cast", but whenever I tried to play videos from Netflix, YouTube, BTSport etc, I was getting a message" error playing a vidoe please chose another one. I got same results when I repeat my action over and over again. I even went to the store and changed it for another one, but I got same results.
    Is there anything else i can do ?

    • From which device are you casting from? Did to try YouTube from your pc? Can you play the video on the device without casting?

      • I'm using either iPad or iPhone ( updated to the latest IOS ),no I'm not using my PC.

        • Did this problem ever get sorted? I have just bought a Chromecast and I get exactly the same problem. Videos (YouTube, iPlayer) show the title at the top of the TV screen, start to play for about a second or so then the screen goes blank with a spinning wheel and finally I get the message Rafal describes. Same from iPad or PC.

          • Not sure about this issue.

            It sounds like connection issue due to router or your ISP settings. But I'm not sure.

        • Your TV should not know what's inserted. For the TV, it is just a hdmi source. It should show no signal or show Chromecast screen.

          Did you try other hdmi ports on the TV?

          You may also try to use the USB adapter provided if you are using the USB port on TV.

    • Not sure. But can you play the YouTube video without Chromecast in your device? Some videos may have geographic restrictions.

        • Are you trying from a PC or mobile phones?

          In mobile phones, you should use the YouTube app. Then tap the cast button.

          If you are using a PC, you should use the cast icon below the video.

  • I have been using my chromecast and my samsung tablet and everything was great. One night the internet failed, I rebooted the router and everything came back. Then the show stopped , said it was reloading and that was it. I cannot connect the doble to wifi again. How can I get it connected to my wifi again.

    • If you didn't change settings in the router , you can just unplug the power cable for Chromecast, wait a min, plug it back.

      If it doesn't work, tell us what's shown on TV screen.

  • I am not sure if this has been posted before but it might help some who are having a problem getting Chromecast to work with a BT Home hub.
    Having followed the set up procedure and established connection OK Youtube and iPlayer would not play, I knew that Chromecast was working as I could display web pages from the Chrome browser on my PC OK (with plugin).
    I finally found the solution, which had been posted on various forums, and that is to turn off 'Smart Setup' on the Home Hub - everything then worked as it should.

  • I have chromecast installed on my tv. I have tried to cast to it from my laptop, Galaxy tab, and samsung galaxy s3 phone and none works. I can reboot the chromecast from all devices but none cast video. Laptop says unexpected error. Phone and tablet don't show cast button on any apps (youtube/ netflix/etc). Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

    • In the laptop, can you cast a chrome tab (normal web pages)? how did you reboot chromcast from the laptop?

      For mobile phones and tablets, in the Chromecast app, can you actually find the Chromecast device?

  • Chromecast damaged my TV: I bought chromecast from currys last week, set it up in the evening, I was able to use it for an hour then turn off my TV but left the chromecast plugged in the power supply then to the HDMI port of my TV, the following morning my 50" LG TV wont work anymore, it will only light up for few seconds and turns blank wont do anything else, but I can hear alien like sound like a slow motion video sound. Please help me

    • It's unlikely that the Chromecast can damage a TV. For the TV, Chromecast is identical a DVD player.

      Anyway, you can always unplug the Chromecast and check other input sources.

    • 1. Yes, the USB port on Chromecast is for power only. So, you can insert it any power source including TV's usb port. But do not insert it into router's USB port. For some routers it may mess up your network.
      2. no difference. Some TVs may fail to provide sufficient current in the USB port.
      3. If you use the device daily, you can just leave it there. If you know you are not going to use it for a few days, you may just unplug the USB cable/adapter. Anyway it is up to you. You can unplug the cable/adapter to save some power (less than 5w).
      Chromecast itself can be left on the TV all the time. There is no reason to remove Chromecast from the TV.

    • Very unlikely, Chromecast should mess up your network. You can always try to unplug Chromecast to test.

      If you connect the USB cable to the router, remove it. The USB should only connect to the power adapter, or the USB ports in TV, NOT the USB port in the router.

  • ChromeCast worked perfect for about a month until http://www.YouTube.com decided we watch too much content, and now requires to enter a reCaptcha. On the PC it reads: "Sorry for the interruption. We have been receiving a large volume of requests from your network. To continue with your YouTube experience, please enter the verification code below" No problem on a PC, you just type in the barely readable code and move on. But the ChromeCast displays: "There was an error playing this video - Please choose another video" on every video and playlist. How do you get past this? I'm assuming YouTube wants the Chromecast to enter a reCaptcha, as it requires on every PC, smartphone, or tablet. A little background info, I installed 2 Chromecasts in a hairsalon, as they want FashionTV all day. The local cable or satellite providers do not carry this station. YouTube runs for about 9-10hrs a day playing 2 playlists simultaneously. Perfect picture quality, no lag,up until yesterday.

    • I don't think there are any easy solutions. It seems the YouTube system thinks the watching behavior from your IP is a bit abnormal. They use some algorithms to do this automatically.

      You can report this issue to YouTube, but probably it is very hard to talk to a "person" in YouTube (they rely on algorithms).

      If you don't have a static IP (unlikely you have one), you can turn off the router in the evening, and turn it on next morning. This may change your IP address.

    • I think you mean the initial setup of Chromecast. Yes, it is normal. During the initial setup, your laptop need connect to the Chromecast directly (and therefore disconnects current connection). But the connection will be restored automatically once you finish the setup.

      For one Chromecast device, you only set it up once. You can set it up from any devices. If you have problems to set it up from laptop (this seldom happens), you can set it up from other devices.

      To use Chromecast, you only need install Google cast extension for your Chrome browser in the laptop. You don't need anything else.

  • I have had chromecast for a year and ran it though my LG phone. We downloaded it to the laptop and my wifi connects to the phone for 5 seconds and then kicks me off. No problem with any other phone or devices, just my phone. I purchased a more powerful router and when I set up the laptop to chromecast my phone again gets kicked out of the wifi. Should I run chromecast just through my phone like I did previously?

    • I don't think it's related to chromecast if you are kicked off the router. Chromecast should not affect the router.

      Anyway, you may tell us in detail how to reproduce the problem.

  • I am trying to run the Chromecast through an HDMI input on my Integra receiver out to my TV and the picture is scrambled. Have checked to make sure I have the input correct and tried switching to another input only to have the same problem. Additionally, I plugged it directly into another TV and the setup screen showed up perfectly, so the Chromecast itself is fine. Everything else (cable, dvd, xbox) plays through receiver to TV fine.

    • This is probably normal. Chromecast does have problems with some receivers. I am not sure but it is probably due to HDMI passing settings on the receivers.

  • Put Chromecast on and it came up with the casting symbol with a red cross in it. In trying to get rid of this I have inadvertantely allowed pop ups. Now the casting symbol has totally disappeared and I can't watch anything on the TV. I have unplugged and reinserted it but still nothing. Can you please advise how to get this working again. Thanks

      1). what's shown on the TV
      2). what do you want to do (casting a chrome tab?) ?

    • During the setup, it should ask you to provide network info. Do you get any errors on TV screen after providing the network info?

    • Chromecast requires a wireless router with active internet connection. It does not work with hotspot. Of course, no Bluetooth.

  • how can i stop my chromecast from a never ending cycle of updating. ive tried plugging directly into mains ,ive tried resetting via the button/app, ive tried restarting my router more than once,(i think) ive tried everything to get the damn thing going again but to no avail.

    • Not sure about the updating loops issue. But if you reset the device correctly, it should ask you to set it again (as a new Chromecast) before it can update itself again.

  • I have an issue. I own three chromecasts on three different tvs. I am trying to use two of them to cast two different tabs from my chrome browser. When I tell it to cast this tab to xx and then go to a different tab and tell it to cast to yy, xx stops casting and yy goes on. Why can't they both work?

    • You need cast from different devices. You cannot cast to more than one Chromecast from one device. You can consider this a limitation currently.

    • Yes, it should work. You can cast from the browser, or use videostream extension, or use plex, for your local videos.

    • it is NOT necessary to set up Chromecast again from the desktop. You only need set up Chromecast once (as you did it from Android phone already).

      In the PC, you need install the Google cast extension for Chrome browser. Then you should be able to use Chromecast if the PC is connected to the same router as Chromecast. Wireless connection on the PC is NOT required.

  • Please provide a list of the Error Indicator LEDs and what their colors/patters indicate. It seems that a solid red light indicates the Chromecast is not receiving enough power to charge. What does a blinking white light indicate? How about a solid white light? What is the color supposed to be when the device is functioning normally and is being used?

    • White without blinking. It may blink when chromecast starts or is connecting to Google servers or is updating or is trying to reconnect to router.

      Anyway, if it is white, you should not worry about it.

  • We have a chromecast for our front room TV & master bedroom TV too... Love it. However, we just bought a TV & a chromecast for my 16 yr old son & his bedroom. Everything set up fine.

    **HOWEVER**, it seems that once I change over to watch a YouTube video or Google play/Vudo movie on my phone or tablet, we can on have 2 chromecast choices. (Example: Front Room & Master Bedroom, Second Bedroom is not available to choose from)

    So is there a limit on how many chromecast devices you can run from a device (ie: phone, tablet)? Or is it that there's a limit on how many chromecast devices will work per internet network? On the chromecast app it shows all 3 devices, but you cannot stream anything to the 3rd (aka: last device added), because when we hit the chromecast icon on YouTube or Google Movies or Vudu, we are only given 2 options to choose from to stream to. Very discouraging!

    I've read everything online to troubleshoot, but this is not addressed.

      I guess it is just a limit due to app design. Did you try to check it in Chrome browser from a PC?

    • It seems something is wrong. Chromecast should save and use the network info you entered when you set it up. What's shown on the TV screen when you say it asks you to set it up again?

      After set up Chromecast, you can try to reboot it from the Chromecast app. Under device tab, tap gear icon, then tap menu icon to find the reboot option.

    • Did you setup your Chromecast? Extensions/apps in Chrome store do NOT check whether you have a device or not.

      Anyway, set up your Chromecast first. Add Google cast extension for your Chrome browser. The try YouTube.

    • To use Chromecast on a Mac, you need install Google cast extension for Chrome browser.

      To use Chromecast on a mobile device (phone or tablet), you need install Chromecast App. Then in all Chromecast-supported apps (for example, YouTube), you can find the cast button to let you switch to TV.

    • Are you using screen cast? Screen cast (screen mirroring) is always follow your device's aspect ratio.

      If you cast from an app (for example, YouTube), it should use your TV's aspect native ratio,

    • if you insert Chromecast on your TV directly, there should be no such issues.

      however, if you insert Chromecast into a AV receiver and two TVs are connected to the output of the receiver, then you may have this issue.

      Anyway, this depends on your configurations and the specs of the receiver.

    • For one Chromecast device, you only need set it up once. After it is setup, you can use it from any devices in the same network. You only need Google cast extension on other pcs or laptops.

    • Do you still have the cast icon in the app? What's led colour in the Chromecast device? Can you find the Chromecast device with Chromecast app?

      • I am having the same problem. I downloaded the CB Online app (for movies and tv shows) and I can watch them on my iPad, but as soon as I try to cast the movie, the movie time immediately goes to 1 second and will not cast.

        • You should feedback this to the app developer. Chromecast support is implemented by app developers.

  • I control my chromecast from netflix application in my Samsung Galaxy S6. Everything works fine except that when an episode ends I can not stop the streamming (every option in the app is in grey, not blank). At some point I get out of the app but the chromecast keep broadcasting and the only way to stop it is unplugging chromecast power source. Do you know what could be going on and how to solve it? Thanks

    • You can stop casting in Google cast app (formally Chromecast app). Open the app on the phone, your have the option to stop casting.

  • I stream from my phone to the t.v. with no problems but then the box disappears and I can't get it back.has happened several times. How do I fix this problem?

    • What app? When casting, there is a notification. You should not tap the X or dismiss the notification.

      If you are referring to cast icon inside the app, you can restart the app. You can also use Google Home app to check where it can find the device.

  • My Chromecast/ Netflix is operated from my iPad but I am having housesitters in and will be taking my iPad with me. How can I give them access to Chromecast/ Netfix without my ipad?

    • Chromecast is not an issue. Any devices connected to the same wireless router can access Chromecast.

      For Netflix, you need to log in. It depends on whether you are comfortable to log in to your Netflix on other devices. Netflix counts how many devices you can use simultaneously depending on your plan on most regions.

      Anyway, neither Chromecast nor Netflix is tied to your iPad. You can always use them in other devices.

  • I cant get past the setup...from lookin at the pic ..i think the Chromecast device i have is a newer version..its round shaped ...well my problem is .that i cant get past the setup process ..reason is it says the internet connection is too slow...my phones internet is my only source i got... Carrier is boost mobile .4 g LTE ....service area is ok ..runs fast when im inside home ..but slows down if i step outside..so i cant firgure out how to get past thru this problem......Second if i end up completing the setup process..am i most likely looking forward to lots of loading and buffering screens? ... Hopefully i can get helped to get this device goin..if not im down $35 ...that could of been spent on a unknown brand streaming device from amazon.🙁

  • My TV is LG. The Chromecast 1st generation was working my TV through Chromecast and Android phone connected to TV. there wasn't any problem. On 12th August 2017 I connected with Miracast Finder app installed in my Android phone. It was connected to TV and phone. I am watching photos through the Chromecast and Miracast Finder. All of sudden Chromecast is not turning/beaming any signal.or not found any device. The Chromecast LED lights color is just like purple color, mixed with Red and white color. Till now the Chromecast is turning. Chromecast reboot button is not turning/working.

    Can you tell me what is the problem is occurred. The Chromecast is become unserviceable.

    • Your Chromecast is physically connected to the TV through HDMI cable. Miracast settings should not affect your Chromecast.

      What's shown in TV screen when you switch HDMI source to Chromecast?

      Are you using the original power adapter for Chromecast?

  • My Galaxy S5 phone has just stopped casting to my tv. I can still watch a programme via the app on the tv screen but I cannot stream anything now from my phone eg facebook videos, zoom meetings etc. I tried switching all off and rebooting but when I try casting , I get a revolving find devices. My phone IS paired to the tv via blue tooth. Nothing happens when I press connect
